How Will Your Love Remember Your Smile?

When you first met the love of your life, what got your attention? Was it her laugh? Was it his eyes?

What is a beautiful smile? It might have been … or it might be if you haven’t met that special someone just yet.

USA Today reported on a survey of single adults just a few years ago. In that survey, singles were asked to name the features that they considered “must haves” in a romantic partner.

The number one answer was nice teeth. For 58 percent of men and 71 percent of women, this was considered an essential characteristic that their future spouse should have.

Most people would agree that having white teeth is part of having a nice smile. If you don’t see a set of “pearly whites” when you look in the mirror, then it might be time to make an appointment with at Parkway Dental.

Professional teeth whitening is one of the many cosmetic services that our dentists offer at our office in Snellville, GA.

Commercial Or Professional Whitening?

You may be wondering why you would go to the dentist for teeth whitening when you can find dozens of self-proclaimed whitening products in the toothpaste aisle at your local grocery store.

Here are a few things to consider from the American Dental Association’s Council on Scientific Affairs.

This council started paying more attention to whitening products as they became more popular and more prevalent. The first thing to keep in mind is that “whitening” is used in two different ways on these products.

In some cases, “whitening” refers to a product that removes surface stains from your teeth. By this definition, virtually any toothpaste could be considered a whitening product. If you are looking into teeth whitening, then you should already realize that that toothpaste alone is not going to stop your teeth from developing stains.

The other whitening products are ones that remove deep-set stains from your teeth. These products contain a bleaching agent (peroxide) to remove stains that have developed gradually over several years.

The ADA has a Seal of Acceptance based on standards for various products. At this time, only commercial whitening products with a maximum of 10 percent carbamide peroxide (which is the equivalent of 3.5 percent hydrogen peroxide) are eligible for this seal.

Part of the reason is that when whitening products are overused or used incorrectly, they can cause tooth sensitivity, irritation, and (in rare cases) tooth damage.

By comparison, professional whitening products can contain between 25 and 40 percent hydrogen peroxide. That means they can be 7 to 11 times more powerful than commercial products.

It probably won’t surprise you to learn that professional products can remove more stains in less time than commercial products. Their potency is also why professional whitening products are available through dentist offices.

Two Ways To Whiter Teeth

If your teeth are yellow or stained, we have two products that could help you. Both are effective, although they work in slightly different ways.

The first is KöR whitening. The most effective KöR treatments use a combination of in-office and at-home treatments. By the time you are finished, you will see a visibly whiter and brighter smile.

KöR’s manufacturer does something that makes it different than other whitening products. Its products are refrigerated from the time they are created until they are delivered to our office. Whitening products are made to be reactive, and they can lose some of their potency if they are stored at room temperatures.

This makes the bleaching agent more effective when it is applied to your teeth via custom-fitted trays. These trays are designed to block saliva, which can reduce the effectiveness of whitening products.

We also offer Zoom! whitening for our patients. With Zoom, you have the option of take-home, in-office, or a combination treatment as well.

With Zoom, the whitening gel is applied to your teeth. Then it is exposed to a special light to improve the effectiveness of the product. During an in-office treatment, we will apply the gel three times for 15 minutes each.

In about one hour, you could be going home with a significantly whiter smile.
