Root Canal Therapy: Relief From Dental Pain
If a tooth is causing you pain and discomfort because of decay or infection, root canal therapy can provide relief while fixing and saving your tooth.
A root canal is needed when the pulp of a tooth becomes damaged by infections. The pulp is made up of the nerves and blood vessels inside your tooth. The pulp is found on the inside of your tooth, in a space known as the root canal. Hence the name of the procedure.
This procedure is used to remove the pulp, clean out the inside of the tooth, and seal the tooth to prevent further infection.
Root Canal Causes
The main cause of a root canal is tooth pain brought on by decay. Root canal therapy is used to get rid of the infection inside of your tooth and prevent the tooth from feeling any pain in the future. If you’re experiencing any of the symptoms listed below, call Parkway Dental as soon as possible to set up an appointment so we can take a closer look at your tooth.
- Severe tooth pain when you chew or apply pressure
- Severe sensitivity to hot or cold
- Discoloration or a drastic change in the color of your tooth
- Inflammation, swelling, or sensitivity of the gums
- A recurring pimple-like spot on the gums
Pain-Free Root Canals
People tend to experience fear and anxiety when they assume that root canal therapy is painful. But it turns out that most people report that the procedure is painless. The pain and discomfort you experience come from your infected tooth, not the procedure. That means a root canal relieves pain, it doesn’t cause it.
At Parkway Dental, we designed this therapy to be simple and pain-free. We use topical and local anesthetics to prevent you from feeling any discomfort. The tooth and the nerve that is connected to it will be numb before we begin the procedure.
If you’re still feeling uneasy about the work being done to repair your tooth, we can use sedation dentistry to help you relax. At our Snellville, GA dental office we offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oral conscious sedation.
Root Canal Treatment Steps
At Parkway Dental, our root canal therapy is a relatively simple process with use of the most advanced techniques and technologies. The first step is to make sure you’re completely comfortable. We will numb the area with local anesthetic and administer sedation medication if necessary.
Once you’re comfortable and ready for us to begin, we will use a special tool called the Vortex Blue rotary file to gain access to the inside of your tooth. You may feel a small amount of pressure if you feel anything at all.
We will then take out all of the infected tissue from inside your tooth. Ultrasonic technology is used to disinfect the root canal. The ultrasonic tools use small vibrations to clear out the infected pulp from inside your tooth.
Because we’re about to use the Vortex Blue Rotary and ultrasonic technology at our Snellville, GA dental office, we’re able to provide a much quicker and more effective treatment to efficiently clean and seal your tooth.
Once the tooth is cleaned and sealed, we fill the cavity of the tooth with gutta-percha, a latex material that prevents further infection from occurring. To finish things off, we’ll cap your tooth with a beautiful, natural-looking dental crown.
When the procedure is finished, you’ll be pain-free and able to go home and enjoy your restored smile.
